This is the latest update on moving forward on the cemetery land acquisition from the State of South Carolina from Treasurer Turner Simkins. He said the Hammond Cemetery Association, Inc. has applied to the IRS for nonprofit status and are waiting for approval. They were about to have everything completed and begin final budgeting and fundraising for the expansion improvements and closing with the Central Savannah River Land Trust when they got word that the National Park Service needed to get involved.
Turner was notified that because Redcliffe Plantation State Historic Site is on the National Register of Historic Places, the National Park Service will have to sign off on the project. He said the expansion site has to be tested for archaeological evidence and get federal approval. He has no idea how long this process will take. You can email Turner at turnersimkins@gmail.com
